How to Set Checkpoints when you hire an animation studio

As per pipelines set for animated projects in animation studios, there are 3 main phases:

  •  Pre-production
  •  Production
  •  Post-production

These three parts form the pipeline of animation production in an animation studio. Depending on type of project different checkpoints or milestones can be setup. Actually pre-production needs more follow up and attention as in that outlines and basics of project will be designated, while in post-production only some general controls may be required. So, we may need to put more stress on foundations which will be base of all further outcomes. You can read more about Why you should put more time on pre-production stage in animation production here. It should be noted that all of these may vary through different projects where client may want to apply some considerations to any phase of the production.

Pre-Production

This very first part goes through provision of items below. By pre-production we mean to get all stuff and assets ready. In other words pre-production plays the role of ingredients in cooking. Once we have materials on board, we can proceed forward conveniently. This phase would found the base of the animated content:

animation studio

Script or scenario is the written plan of the animation story which provides info regarding the story flow, characters, scenes and actions needed to be depicted through the video. Authors and artists usually have a high passion to blow creative ideas, emotional/ action scenes and other elegances to the story and here at this step, they add them. .

animation studio

Storyboard is illustrations and images in sequence according to the script for giving guide and preview to the executive team and animator within a studio. Also, it helps the team know about camera angles and scene layouts.

animation studio

After fixing characters’ dialogues, voice actors start recording. Sometimes before recording final voices, some test voices are recorded for setting on story reel so that we can have an overview from the outcome and also bugs will be fixed. Besides that, voices are need for doing lip-syncing process, where animators give motion to characters’ lips based on words and expressions within each character’s dialogue.

animation studio

Story Reel/animatic is the storyboard with voice over/sound track synchronized to it. It helps animators and directors to figure out if there are timing disorders with voice over/sound and storyboard before getting started with animation so they would fix it. Although it is the very first part where motion comes to happen, motions in storyboard are not considered as animation. They are some rough moves, something like stop motion, and even with longer steps between each two frames. It is also known as animatics.

3D animated videos help grow your business

Based on the script and characters description, a rough sketch of the characters would be drawn. Then, after revising the sketch and developing the characters specifications, a more final version called 2D concept would be developed. Imagine a character is a young girl who is a college student. She is easy-going, social, energetic and is a fan of animals. So, considering these attributes, character artist can have a clear vision from the girl and will illustrate her out.

animation studio

Environments are the scenes in which the story takes place such as rooms, parks, streets etc. Usually by reading script, we can find out what locations are needed. Animation theme also affects environment design, as if the video is intended for toddlers, then simple and bright colors and low level of details would be entailed in locations.

Production

After having stuff mentioned above, production can take place. Animator has got all ingredients now. Picks characters, sets them up in locations and starts animating. This phase covers:

animation studio

Having the 2D concepts of characters, 3D artist models the concepts using software tools like Maya or 3ds Max. At this level, concepts are converted into 3D objects which have a structure called mesh. These meshes can have different types depending on type of project.

3D Character Game Art

Now the material for characters skin and clothes surfaces are set and defined. This step is called texture design. As an example, if a desk is wooden, artist will assign wood material appearance to the desk.

3D Environment Game Art

As stated before, Environments are the scenes in which the story takes place such as rooms, parks, streets etc. So, after estimating what locations/scenes are needed in the animation, they will be generated in 3D space.

3D Environment Game Art

Here again details and attributes are assigned to environments based on their quiddity.

Having the storyboard, characters and environments ready, the production supervisor will set the objects, characters and camera in the scene (environment) which is called scene layout.

promotional animation

Now it is time to animate! With script, storyboard, 3D characters and environments, the animator vivifies the story and crates the animation

commercial animation studios

3D rendering is the automatic 3D computer graphics process where the render artist comes to action and gives color and light to the models and environments of a scene. Rendering is the final step of the animation process. You can consider rendering as the painting, where all assets and scenes are grey before that and with rendering they get their actual colors assigned.

Post-Production

Gathering all produced items and finalizing them is known as post-production. It includes composite, visual and sound effects (VFX & SFX)

When the artist animates the scenes, they need to be set in one unique sequence, this is known as composite. This asset is used to stitch and combine different animation pieces in the order we want. Also, in any video some sounds and effects are needed like sound of a door getting shot, sound of water. Moreover, some visual effects like smoke, fog and  other required effects would be added here.
